Discover the difference at BSB's Primary School Open Morning

If you're a family living in Brussels - or considering a move to the area - and exploring international education options for your young children, the British School of Brussels (BSB) invites you to its Primary School Open Morning on Thursday, 9 May 2025, from 09:30 to 11:30.

Discover the difference at BSB's Primary School Open Morning

Held on its welcoming and well-equipped Tervuren campus, just 20 minutes from central Brussels, this event offers a first-hand look at how BSB supports children aged 1 to 11 through a nurturing, inclusive, and high-quality international education.

Foundations of trust and joy

BSB emphasises that early education is about more than academics; it’s about building trust, security, and joy. From ages 1 to 7, children thrive in a positive environment designed to support significant developmental milestones.

The Early Years curriculum is rooted in international research and focuses on play-based education guided by the "Characteristics of Effective Learning." This approach inspires curiosity, critical thinking, and independence while allowing children to follow their unique developmental paths.

Creativity and engagement

BSB’s learning environment encourages creativity through free-flow exploration and structured inquiries. Teachers use storytelling and hands-on activities to ignite curiosity. The school also integrates outdoor learning into its curriculum through its "Learning without Walls" programme. Activities in spaces on campus like The Glade or the adjoining Tervuren Forest help children connect with nature while developing teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving skills.

As Esther O’Connor, Team Leader for Primary at BSB, notes: “spending time outdoors enriches children’s development both socially and academically.”

Holistic learning in Primary Years

For children aged 5–7, BSB blends play-based learning with the English National Curriculum. This ensures academic readiness while maintaining the joy of discovery.

Interdisciplinary "Units of Discovery" integrate subjects like Science, Art, History, and Geography to develop critical thinking. Specialist teachers in French, Dutch, Music, PE, and Outdoor Learning add variety and expert guidance.

Global citizenship

BSB instils global citizenship values in its students from an early age. Students from Year 1 to Year 6 participate in bilingual classes taught by English and French specialists. Language acquisition is integrated into daily routines through songs, stories, and games. By Key Stage 1 (ages 5–7), children have four weekly French lessons that include role-playing and musical activities.

As students progress into Key Stages 3 and 4 (ages 11+), the focus shifts toward language structure while maintaining oral communication emphasis. Activities like dialogues and collaborative stories foster a supportive learning environment.

According to Debra Kidd, Primary Leader of Learning and Teaching: “our curriculum meets the requirements of the English National Curriculum but is unique to BSB.” She adds that it emphasises creativity, compassion, and community.

Parental involvement

BSB views parents as essential partners in their child’s education. Programmes like "Curriculum Experience" mornings and parent-teacher consultations invite families into classrooms to engage with their child’s learning journey. This collaboration strengthens the bond between home and school.

An open-door policy ensures parents feel supported through informal chats or structured events organised by the Families of BSB association. These efforts create a welcoming environment where families feel included both on and off campus.

Inclusivity and diversity

With over 70 nationalities represented at BSB, inclusivity is central to its ethos. The school celebrates diversity as a strength that broadens horizons for students and families alike. Tailored support services ensure seamless transitions for families relocating to Belgium.

Parents describe BSB as "a home away from home," where strong relationships between staff, students, and families foster a sense of belonging. Pastoral support systems, mentoring programmes, and family-focused initiatives like buddy systems further enhance this community spirit.

Choosing a school is a significant decision for any parent. At BSB, children receive more than just an education; they join a community where they feel safe, valued, and inspired daily. For families seeking an exceptional start for their child’s educational journey or relocating to Belgium, BSB offers an unparalleled experience where every child can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
