Triathlete Hayden Wilde was hit by a car while cycling during training in Japan.
He shared the news in an Instagram post. A few hours after competing in a running race in central Tokyo on Saturday evening, the New Zealander, who earned a silver medal at the Olympics in Paris, was struck by a vehicle. Wilde, who is the partner of triathlete Hanne De Vet, sustained several broken ribs, a fractured shoulder blade, and a lung injury.
The 27-year-old triathlete, who won the Antwerp 10 Miles last Sunday, participated in the Asics Tokyo Speed Race on Saturday evening, alongside other top runners. He achieved a personal best for the 10-kilometre distance, clocking a time of 27:39.
Wilde, the Olympic silver medallist, remains undefeated this season, with victories in the opening round of the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) in Abu Dhabi in February and the T100 in Singapore at the beginning of April. “I have to stay in Japan for a few weeks due to my lung injury, which prevents me from travelling,” Wilde stated. He was scheduled to compete in the second round of the WTCS in Yokohama in 15 days.
