France gives IOC financial guarantee for the 2030 Winter Games
(L. to R.) The presidents of the French National Olympic Committee, David Lappartient, the French Paralympic Committee, Marie-Amelie Le Fur and the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Regional Council, Laurent Wauquiez, announcing the French Alps' bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games at a press conference in Paris on 7 November 2023.

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier has given the International Olympic Committee (IOC) France's financial guarantee for the 2030 Winter Games, official sources disclosed on Wednesday.

The guarantee is necessary for the IOC to make the award of the Games to the French Alps official.

"As Prime Minister ... I commit to guarantee to cover any potential budgetary deficit of the organising committee," Barnier wrote in a letter addressed to IOC President Thomas Bach.

The letter was published on X by representatives of the two regions concerned, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

France was the only country in the running since it supplanted Sweden and Switzerland last November. Bach had announced at the time of the vote on 24 July that it would organise the 26th Winter Games if it provided financial guarantees from the State and the regions.
