The 1,000-km 'Kom op tegen Kanker' (Stand up to Cancer') event will continue over the next three days, despite the passing of cycling champion Ludo Dierckxsens during the race.
Dierckxsens (60), one of the road captains, fell ill on Thursday afternoon during the race's first stage in Dendermonde, between the midday stop in Buggenhout and the finish line in Mechelen. Despite the efforts made to resuscitate him, he passed away.
The event’s organisers expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and quickly deliberated whether to continue the event. They ultimately decided to proceed, which was what Dierckxsens himself would have wanted. “We'll be back tomorrow,” the organisers said. “Solemnly, with Ludo in our thoughts and in our hearts, more united than ever.”
The organisation also extended its condolences to the Dierckxsens’ family and friends. “We are continuing for Ludo and for them,” said spokesperson Sven Haenen, “and for everyone participating in the 1,000 kilometres with their own burdensome stories.”
In the coming days, various tributes will be paid.
“We are currently displaying a large photo of Ludo in Mechelen’s Grote Markt,” Haenen said.
“Ludo was involved from the first edition, truly part of our family," he added. "The peloton he rode with today will arrive soon, and we’ll give them a warm welcome as it was undoubtedly an extra difficult afternoon for them.
"We are planning something special for tomorrow’s start, but details are still under discussion.”
