Belgian basketball star Emma Meesseman has officially signed with the US basketball team New York Liberty. Meesseman is joining the team for the remainder of the season in the North American women’s basketball league (WNBA).
The 32-year-old forward from Flanders previously played in the WNBA from 2013 to 2020 with the Washington Mystics, winning the championship in 2019 and being named the Finals MVP. Meesseman returned to the league in 2022 with the Chicago Sky.
"Emma Meesseman’s return to the WNBA is an incredible moment for our league, and her choice of New York for this next chapter speaks volumes," said Jonathan Kolb, the Liberty’s manager.
"She is one of the most talented, intelligent, and selfless players in the world, and her presence elevates everyone around her. Emma brings championship experience and a unique versatility that perfectly suits our team as we pursue the title," Kold added.
With her arrival, Meesseman joins fellow Belgians Julie Allemand and Julie Vanloo, who both play in Los Angeles. She will make her debut for New York against Connecticut, coached by former Belgian Cats coach Rachid Méziane, with assistance from Pascal Angilis, currently an assistant with the Cats, at 01:30 Belgian time on Saturday.
New York won its first-ever championship title in 2024 and is the main favourite to repeat its success.
