Clashes erupted on Saturday evening between Dutch and Turkish football supporters in Berlin’s fan zone near the Brandenburg Gate, shortly after the Euro 2024 quarterfinal match between their two teams.
The match ended in a 2-1 victory for the Netherlands.
The fan zone catered for supporters who were without tickets for the match, held at Berlin’s Olympic stadium. Fans from both sides could gather and watch the game together on a big screen.
Police intervened swiftly as the situation escalated, resulting in the clearing of the fan zone. An unknown number of individuals were arrested.
Inside the stadium, Dutch and Turkish fans were seated side by side without any issues.
Before the match, police also stopped a procession of Turkish fans heading to the stadium as they repeatedly made a controversial ‘wolf salute’, a symbol associated with the Turkish ultra-nationalist group, Grey Wolves. This salute was also witnessed from dozens of Turkish fans during the match.
