More than 1,200 people were killed in Haiti between July and September, marking a 27% increase compared to the previous quarter in the gang-ravaged country, the UN office in Haiti reports.
In a report published on Wednesday, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) said 1,223 people were killed and 522 were injured due to gang violence and efforts to combat these gangs.
This was a 32% drop compared to the first quarter, but a 27% increase compared to the second.
Between January and March, 1,660 people lost their lives, while 945 were killed in the April - June period.
The report attributed 47% of the deaths to gang activities, which continue to plague the nation. Operations carried out by security forces accounted for 45% of the fatalities.
Another 8% of the killings were attributed to civilian groups that have risen up against the gangs, a phenomenon that has become increasingly common since the spring.
