83-year-old Japanese Kenichi Horie has become the oldest solo sailor to have crossed the Pacific, Japanese media report.

Strikingly, 60 years ago, the man was also the youngest to cross the Pacific.

After a journey of 8,500 kilometers, Horie crossed the finish line on Saturday morning in the Kii Channel in southern Japan. The sailing took him a total of 69 days, after taking off in San Francisco on the west coast of the US at the end of March.

He kept in touch with helpers and other people during his trip through a satellite phone.

In 1962 Horie had sailed in reverse, from Nishinomiya in Japan to San Francisco. The journey he made at the time – without a passport – made him famous. He also wrote a book about his adventure.
