The Tivoli Friheden amusement park in Aarhus, western Denmark, announced on Friday that a roller coaster had been closed permanently, one day after a 14-year-old girl died there in an accident.

The “Cobra,” a roller coaster that can reach speeds of up to 70 km/hr., had already been involved in a serious accident 14 years ago that injured four people.

“After the 2008 accident and now the accident in 2022, we are no longer confident that the ride is safe enough to continue to be part of Tivoli Friheden,” park manager Henrik Ragborg Olesen said in a press release.

The accident occurred early Thursday afternoon, when a trolley fell off the back of the roller coaster, killing a 14-year-old girl and injuring a 13-year-old boy in the hand.

The same type of Italian-designed roller coaster, which runs on a 400-metre circuit at a height of 25 metres, had already caused an accident in 2008, shortly after they were introduced.

At the time, it was the front part that had come off. Four people were seriously injured, and the investigation revealed a construction error.

The Tivoli Friheden Park, which was evacuated after the accident, will remain closed until Monday.
