Heavy rains and flooding near Ancona, a city on Italy’s Adriatic coast, have killed at least ten people, according to Italian authorities.

Four people are still missing, including two children and a mother, after torrential rain and flooding hit the province of Ancona in the Marche region, Ansa news agency reported on Thursday night after receiving information from the disaster relief services.

Luigi D'Angelo, from the National Civil Protection Department, said: 'About 420 millimetres of rain fell in about two or three hours, there is a massive ongoing emergency response on the ground.

The President of the Marche, Francesco Acquaroli, raised the alarm on Facebook of a “very serious meteorological crisis.”

Emergency services had already called on residents of the coastal town of Senigallia, north of Ancona, to move to higher ground on Thursday.
