Hawaii's spectacular eruption of Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, is over according to the US geophysical institute USGS.

Mauna Loa erupted again in late November, after 38 years of being dormant.

At the peak of its activity, the volcano spewed impressive streams of molten rock and lava fountains up to 60 metres high into the air.

For a fortnight, Mauna Loa, which is so large that it covers half the island of Hawaii, also emitted tonnes of volcanic gas. Its summit is some 4,100 metres above sea level.

In the last eruption in 1984, a lava flow of about 25 kilometres reached the village of Hilo.

This time, local residents were spared from the natural disaster.
