The United States' Department of Justice has seized six documents – which were "classified documents and supporting materials" – during a search of President Joe Biden's private residence in Wilmington (Delaware), his lawyer Bob Bauer communicated.

The extensive search of Biden's home in Delaware lasted 13 hours and a total of six classified documents were found, some dating from his time as a senator 15 years ago, others from his time as Vice-President (under Barack Obama) six years ago.

Earlier this month, confidential documents were already found by Biden's associates in the Delaware home and turned over to the Justice Department. The US president had also left confidential documents in a former office.

Biden reacted with surprise, saying he does not know what the documents contain. US Justice Secretary Merrick Garland has appointed an independent prosecutor to investigate the matter.

VRT's US correspondent Björn Soenens called the situation a "political nightmare" for Biden, as he himself blamed his predecessor Donal Trump for recklessly handling classified documents.
