A tourist plane crashed on Saturday morning in steep terrain near Les Ponts-de-Martel in the Neuchâtel mountains in western Switzerland.

Several deaths were reported, a regional police spokesman confirmed, following a report by RTN radio.

The type of aircraft that crashed and the number of occupants had not been specified at first. “We must first notify the families of the victims,” the spokesman told Keystone-ATS. A statement will be issued late on Saturday evening.

The accident occurred in a steep, difficult-to-access area at around 10:20 on Saturday.

Rescue workers and police are at the scene, RTN reported. The area is temporarily closed to the public. An investigation is being carried out by the Public Ministry to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy.
