Two Belgians, aged 32 and 39, were seriously injured in a small plane crash in Portugal near the Montargil dam on Friday, according to reports from local media.

As reported by Sudinfo, the private ultralight aircraft, occupied by the two Belgians, reportedly encountered a problem shortly after take-off from Ponte de Sor airport – approximately a two-hour drive from Lisbon – where the Portugal Air Summit is taking place until Sunday.

The plane crashed after just a few kilometres of flight and emergency services arrived quickly at the scene. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy.

Director of the Ponte de Sor Municipal Aerodrome, Sandra Catarino, confirmed to Correio da Manhã that the crashed aircraft was a "private flight" and was in no way related to the summit. "It has nothing to do with the activity or programme of the Portugal Air Summit and does not affect the air activities planned for the weekend."

A few hours later on Friday, another accident occurred at the airfield, leaving one person dead and another seriously injured.
