British Princess Kate Middleton (42) is undergoing treatment for cancer, she announced in a video message posted to social media on Friday evening. The disease came to light after her abdominal surgery in January.

Middleton, the British princess of Wales, announced that she is undergoing preventive chemotherapy after cancer was found to be present in her body following major abdominal surgery at the start of this year.

"It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family but I've had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful," she said in a video posted on social media by Kensington Palace.

For a long time, it was unclear what exactly was wrong with the Princess. The Palace only reported in January that she would undergo planned abdominal surgery and that she would have to rest at least until Easter.

The reason for the surgery was not disclosed. In total, the Princess of Wales was in hospital for 13 days. Now, Kate said that subsequent tests revealed that cancer had been found.

"My medical team therefore advised me to undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment," she said, adding that the news came "as a huge shock" to her and her family, especially after it was also announced earlier this year that King Charles suffers from cancer.

"It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to [our children] George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them and to reassure them that I am going to be okay."

The Princess said that she is doing well and getting stronger "every day," adding that her husband and heir to the throne "William is a great source of comfort and reassurance. As is the love, support and kindness shown by so many of you. It means a lot to both of us."

Now, she is asking for peace and privacy in the coming period.

In recent weeks, there has been much speculation on social media about the reason for Catherine's prolonged absence, which was further fuelled after the palace released an edited photo of her and her children.
