One of the two survivors of a plane crash in South Korea on Sunday morning told doctors he was unaware of the rescue operation.

"When I woke up, I had already been rescued," the 33-year-old steward said while in hospital. He and the other survivor have been hospitalised in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea.

Both individuals were crew members on flight JJA-2216 travelling from Bangkok in Thailand to Muan airport in South Korea. The plane was forced to emergency land and caught fire, killing 179 out of 181 people on board.

They were the only two people to survive. The other survivor is a 25-year-old woman. She suffered injuries to her ankle and head, according to Yonhap news agency.

A video of the crash that occurred on Sunday morning has been broadcast by the local channel MBC and circulated globally.

The identification of the victims is ongoing, and the two black boxes have been recovered.

National mourning and condolences

Boeing confirmed it is in contact with Jeju Air and stands "ready to support them."

"We offer our deepest condolences," the company stated in a release posted on social media on Sunday.

Pope Francis said his thoughts were with the families and that he was praying for the victims.

South Korea has declared a seven-day period of national mourning.
