Around 800,000 people in France were without mobile phone reception on Monday night after an alleged arson attack on a telecommunications mast.

The incident, which has also affected television reception, took place on a 90-metre-high mast in Cenves, near Lyon, on Monday evening.

Broadcaster France Info reported a regional executive of the TDF network operator as describing the act as “undeniably criminal.”

The damage is reported to be extensive, and efforts are underway to fully restore the service within 24 to 48 hours.

In addition to technicians, police are also at the scene.

While the exact circumstances are still unclear, sabotage is being considered.
