Human rights organisations Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch (HRW) have condemned US President Donald Trump’s plan for the Gaza Strip.
Trump announced on Tuesday that he wants the United States to take control of the war-torn area, develop it, and temporarily relocate the Palestinian population.
HRW believes that if executed, this plan would constitute a crime against humanity and an alarming escalation of forced displacement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza.
Amnesty International’s Secretary-General Agnès Callamard described Trump’s rhetoric as incendiary, scandalous, and shameful. She emphasised that his statements must be unequivocally condemned on a large scale.
Callamard stated that any plan to forcibly deport Palestinians against their will from occupied territory is a war crime and, if part of a widespread or systematic attack on the civilian population, constitutes a crime against humanity.
Lama Fakih, HRW’s director for the Middle East and North Africa, echoed Callamard’s concerns. She also highlighted the destruction caused by Israel, America’s ally, in Gaza.
Fakih warned that implementing Trump’s plan would shift the United States from being complicit in war crimes to directly committing atrocities.
