Microsoft is pulling the plug on the video calling service Skype, the American software giant announced on Friday.

Skype will no longer be available from May 2025. Existing accounts will then be transferred to Teams.

In 2016, Microsoft had around 300 million monthly Skype users, but this dropped to 36 million by 2023. The video calling service has struggled to complete with other similar services including Microsoft's Teams, Google Meet, WhatsApp, and Zoom.

Skype was launched in 2003 by Scandinavian engineers. It later came into the hands of the auction platform eBay and then a private equity fund. In 2011, Microsoft bought Skype for $8.5 billion. It was the software giant's biggest acquisition to date.
