Dozens of people have died in a fire that broke out overnight from Saturday to Sunday in a nightclub in North Macedonia, the official agency MIA reported, citing the Ministry of the Interior.

“At least 50 people died in the nightclub ‘Pulse’ in Kocani,” located about 100 kilometres east of the capital Skopje, where “around 1,500 people attended a concert,” MIA said.

The AFP has not yet been able to confirm this information with the authorities.

According to the agency, the fire devastated the ‘Pulse’ nightclub in Kocani, a town of around 30,000 inhabitants, during a concert by DNK, a popular hip-hop group in the country. The audience, mostly young people, gathered for the concert that started at midnight.

The fire reportedly broke out around 3:00, according to the news site SDK.

SDK also reported that “over 100 young people were injured,” citing the Directorate for Protection and Rescue and the Crisis Management Centre. The injured were transported to hospitals in Kocani and Stip, about 30 kilometres south of Kocani.

The fire was likely caused by the use of pyrotechnic devices, according to some media sources.
