French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that the decision to sanction Russia if it refuses a ceasefire in Ukraine is a "test of credibility" for the United States under President Donald Trump.
If Russia "confirms" it is "not ready to make peace," Washington must show its "commitment" to sanction Moscow, Macron told the press during a visit to Singapore, emphasising that "this is a test of credibility for the Americans."
Macron, speaking alongside Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, noted he had spoken to President Trump 48 hours earlier, who expressed impatience. "The question now is, what do we do about it? We (Europeans) are ready," he added.
Macron is set to deliver the opening speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue later, Asia's largest security and defence forum, which was attended last year by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
On 10 May, Macron, along with fellow European leaders of the "coalition of volunteers," visited Kyiv. They threatened Moscow with massive sanctions if Russia did not agree to an immediate ceasefire, a warning that has not yet resulted in action.
