Most of the severe fires that raged in Greece this weekend have been brought under control or completely extinguished. Firefighters are still battling the flames in a sparsely populated area in the northwest of the country, according to the ERTNews channel.

Over the past three days, several large fires broke out in northern Athens, on the islands of Crete, Euboea, and Kythira, and on the Peloponnese peninsula. Dozens of people were hospitalised with respiratory problems, and several villages had to be evacuated.

Numerous animals – both livestock and wildlife – have died, and homes have been destroyed. Tourist facilities are reportedly spared for the time being.

Civil Protection and the fire department warn that the fire risk will remain high in the coming days. Due to the ongoing drought and strong winds, even small fires could grow into major blazes.
