Nizar Trabelsi, previously convicted in Belgium for plotting an attack on the Kleine-Brogel airbase, is returning to Belgium from the United States, according to VRT.

Trabelsi was arrested in Belgium in September 2001, shortly after the 9/11 attacks in New York.

He was accused of planning an attack on the Kleine-Brogel airbase and was sentenced to ten years in prison, which he served in full.

Subsequently, he was extradited to the United States to face charges for the same offences.

In 2023, he was acquitted by a US court. Despite several attempts to return to Belgium, he was repeatedly denied entry.

The Belgian government faced multiple condemnations for this refusal from both the Belgian Court of Appeal and the European Court of Human Rights but took no action.

Trabelsi is now indeed on his way back to Belgium, however, his future remains uncertain as he lacks a valid residence permit in the country.
