French President Emmanuel Macron has cautioned Israel against carrying out any “offensive” actions or “attempted annexations,” stating it would not halt the growing international recognition of a Palestinian state.

Speaking on Tuesday after discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Macron said: “No offensive, annexation attempt, or forced displacement of populations will stop the momentum we have created with the Crown Prince, which many partners have already joined.”

He also criticised the United States for denying visas to Palestinian officials for the UN General Assembly, calling the US decision “unacceptable.” Macron urged Washington to reverse its stance and “allow Palestinian representation in line with the Host Country Agreement.”

On 22 September, Macron is set to co-chair a conference on the “two-state solution” at the UN headquarters in New York alongside the Saudi Crown Prince. At this event, France and several other States are expected to formalise their recognition of Palestine as an independent nation.

Macron’s statement comes amid reports that Israel is considering annexing territory in the occupied West Bank in response to the growing wave of international moves recognising Palestinian statehood.

Israel has criticised recognition efforts, viewing them as “rewarding Hamas” in the wake of its attacks on Israeli civilians on 7 October 2023.

In his message, Macron called for “a permanent ceasefire,” the release of “all hostages,” and “the massive delivery of humanitarian aid” to Gaza. He also advocated for deploying a stabilisation mission in the region.

Looking forward, Macron emphasised the need to disarm Hamas and ensure it is excluded from Gaza’s governance. He also called for reforms and the strengthening of the Palestinian Authority as well as the full reconstruction of Gaza.
