Italy’s gas station managers will close their doors from Tuesday evening to Thursday in protest against a government measure obliging them to display the average national price of petrol and diesel alongside their own prices.

As elsewhere in Europe, oil prices have been fluctuating in Italy due to the war in Ukraine and economic uncertainties, reaching an all-time record last year.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government suspects that companies in the sector are speculating on prices.

For their part, service station organisations complained on Monday of an absence of real dialogue. “The government continues to point to a lack of transparency in sales prices instead of discussing the real problems,” protest organisers said.
