Drawing upon the superb route of the Red Devils in Russia, once again King Philippe underlined on Friday, in his traditional July 21st speech (a day early), that it is in the interest of all Belgians to remain united.
“Our very own Red Devils brilliantly embodied our motto: ‘L’Union fait la force’ (‘Unity makes strength’). In particular, the Sovereign stressed, “We are strong together in our diversity, by bringing our talents together and pursuing a common ideal.” The King himself had sworn his oath five years ago, on July 21st, 2013.

Without, of course, openly mentioning the present political situation in which Belgium is experiencing two elections six months apart, the Head of State nevertheless made a fresh plea, which could scarcely be viewed as cryptic, for unity between communities.

He maintained, “By seeking the things that unite us as a nation, we are succeeding in fully exploiting all of the richness inherent within our differences. Our frailties may then be transformed into strengths. A spirit of unity does not ignore such differences, on the contrary it welcomes them.”

In his speech, King Philippe also paid tribute to his uncle King Baudouin, the 25th anniversary of whose death will take place on July 31st.

The Head of State concluded saying, “King Baudouin was a man of hope. He drew strength from having a deep faith in human nature. He always listened, emphasising the strengths of others. He remains a magnificent source of inspiration for us all.”
