The demonstration, which does not have the approval of the city council, has been triggered by recent incidents including the judicial investigation of the Schild & Vrienden organisation youth organisation in Flanders and racist messages sent to RTBF broadcaster Cécile Djunga, “Enough is enough,” the campaign states.
“Following violent incidents in Schaerbeek, Liege, Ostend, Charleroi, Willebroek, Auderghem, La Louviere, Brussels, Mont-Saint-Guibert, Leopoldsburg, Anderlues, Evere, Aarschot and elsewhere, the silence of our government or its misplaced statements are no longer acceptable,” the movement said in a statement.
Organisers stressed the demonstration is not against Islamophobia alone. “We want to bring together everyone who has respect for fundamental rights, said Hajib El Hajjaj, deputy president of the collective.
Meanwhile the collective’s own annual report revealed that of all complaints its has received concerning Islamophobia, 39% came from Brussels, the largest proportion ahead of online (31%), Wallonia (16%) and Flanders (10%).
