A fire broke out at a retirement home in Ypres, causing a 95-year-old resident to be hospitalised due to smoke inhalation.
Firefighters were alerted to the incident at 06:42 on Sunday morning.
Upon arrival, they discovered a fire blazing in a first-floor room. Staff at the retirement home, located on Meenseweg in Ypres, swiftly evacuated residents from neighbouring rooms to a safer part of the building.
The affected resident, from the room in question, suffered smoke inhalation and had to be rushed to the hospital. Three additional staff members were also taken to hospital for precautionary check-ups.
The fire was quickly brought under control and confined to the single room. The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
