Yuksel Kalaz, Ghent city councillor for Belgium's Workers Party PVDA, has to appear in court for taking videos of police officers in which they could be identified.

Kalaz was involved in protecting workers after the Belgian supermarket chain decided to franchise its own shops. During one of the many strike actions at Delhaize in April last year, he made several videos and took photos which he shared on social media. However, these images allegedly showed police officers recognisably on camera.

"Publishing and/or distributing via social media images made during an intervention in which police officers are shown recognisably without permission is not allowed," the East Flanders public prosecutor's office said.

For this reason, Kalaz has been summoned to appear before the court on Wednesday 7 August.

"Kalaz has been interrogated, but he has not confessed to the facts. Therefore, an amicable settlement is not possible," according to the East Flanders public prosecutor's office. A press officer at the public prosecutor's office added that he will likely have to pay a fine.
