Jan Peumans (N-VA), former Speaker of the Flemish Parliament, has been named the new chair of the Limburg University Colleges Association (AUHL), the association announced on Friday.

The association's general assembly approved Peumans' appointment on Thursday evening. Peumans' term will run until 15 February 2026. He is succeeding Tom Seurs (N-VA), who will now focus on his roles as Flemish Parliament member and Mayor of As (Limburg province).

"Throughout his career, Jan Peumans has shown himself to be a true public servant, with a great love for Limburg and education," said Hasselt University Chancellor Bernard Vanheusden and Ben Lambrechts, General Director of PXL University College, in a press release. They also thanked Tom Seurs for his dedication and efforts within the association.

Peumans expressed his honour in being appointed chair. "Although I studied in Leuven, my connection with education in Limburg has always remained strong. From the parliament, we supported and approved several expansions including the addition of law, mobility sciences, and business sciences. Limburg can rightfully be proud of its higher education, but there is still work to be done."

Seurs noted that while education in Limburg is advancing, there are still areas for improvement. "More collaboration is necessary for growth, reputation, and quality, especially in times of limited resources," he said.

"The association must play a key role as a bridge-builder between PXL and UHasselt, as well as with external parties such as employers, Limburg organisations, and politicians."

Seurs also called on AUHL to promote the participation of students with a migration background in higher education, focusing on lifelong learning, and enhancing the student experience in Limburg.
