Police in Gembloux, Namur, were targeted by masked individuals on New Year's Eve following a call to action on social media.
Gembloux is is a Walloon city located in the province of Namur. On 30 December, a call to action was posted on social media by an individual whose identity remains unknown, the Namur Public Prosecutor's Office said on Friday.
Several people responded to the call and gathered in the centre of Gembloux on the night of 31 December to 1 January. The individuals were masked and dressed in black. They set off firecrackers and fireworks in the city centre, targeting the police with the intention of harming them.
Some of the firecrackers and fireworks were reportedly homemade. A police vehicle was targeted upon arrival, and obstacles were placed on the road to hinder police movement. No officers were injured.
The masked individuals eventually fled. A police investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the suspects. The Prosecutor's Office did not specify the number of individuals involved.
