In Antwerp, the Flemish Foundation for Traffic Knowledge (VSV) has organised the first-ever ‘Speed Pedelec Day’ to address the rising popularity and unique safety challenges of speed pedelecs.

The VSV recognises speed pedelecs as a viable alternative to cars, especially for commuting, offering a solution to traffic congestion. However, these vehicles necessitate greater attention to traffic safety, as they are not merely standard electric bikes. Legally considered Class P mopeds, speed pedelec riders must possess an AM licence or a regular driving licence.

Amidst their growing popularity, the number of speed pedelec accidents has also increased. In 2023, 682 riders were involved in traffic accidents, including three fatalities. The number of victims has nearly doubled over the past five years, with injuries typically more severe than those of other cyclists, likely due to the pedelecs’ higher speeds.

“Speed pedelecs offer numerous benefits: they are emission-free, improve rider fitness, and help avoid traffic jams,” said Flemish Minister of Mobility Annick De Ridder (N-VA). “However, the increased speed presents additional risks. With Speed Pedelec Day, we address the growing interest and concerns about the road safety of these users.”
