The number of fixed-term accounts held by Belgians has reached an all-time high, surpassing one million by the end of 2024, marking a 32% increase over the past year.

According to figures from the banking federation Febelfin, as reported by L'Echo and De Tijd, this is three times the number recorded in 2022.

The surge in fixed-term accounts is largely due to the reversal of interest rates initiated in 2022 and 2023, when banks gradually increased rates on savings and fixed-term accounts.

The introduction of tax-advantageous government bonds in September 2023 significantly accelerated this trend.

By the end of 2024, the number of fixed-term accounts had risen by 32%, reaching 1.033 million.
