A fire broke out on Wednesday morning in a four-storey building in Brussels, according to the Brussels Fire Brigade spokesperson, Walter Derieuw.

At around 8:50, the Fire Brigade, medical services, and the BruMi police responded to a fire on the second floor of a building in Chaussée de Neerstalle, in Forest. "There was heavy smoke when we arrived on site," said Derieuw.

A resident from the fourth floor was evacuated using a ladder. Three other people were able to exit the building safely using the stairwell. They were then taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

The fire was extinguished and a search operation was carried out to verify that the building was empty. The Brussels energy operator, Sibelga, cut off the power supply for the entire building. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

The building was declared uninhabitable due to fire and water damage to the lower floors, the power outage and smoke and soot damage, explained Derieuw.
