Major cycling tours through Brussels this Sunday - what to expect and how to take part

This Sunday the BXL Tour, now on its 9th edition, will see cyclists zipping through the streets of Brussels on a closed traffic-free circuit. It's not too late to register to join in.

The Tour takes part alongside the final stage of the Baloise Belgium Tour which runs from Merelbeke-Melle in Flanders to Brussels over 5 days.

The 94th edition of the Belgium Tour takes in stops all across Belgium and features 8 WorldTour teams as part of its 20-team lineup. The final on Sunday, will see riders complete five laps of 37.6km before finishing under the Atomium.

BXL Tour

Ahead of the final of the Belgium Tour, Brussels will host the BXL Tour, a 40km loop around the city starting from 09:00. The BXL Tour, which also ends at the Atomium, is open to advanced cyclists as well as the general public. Four categories are available to allow different levels of participation, with each setting off at different times.

The Master category will see traditional racing with a minimum speed of 40km/h for the full loop, the Cyclo category has a minimum speed of 20km/h and allows younger riders, while the Paracycle category covers the full loop with a minimum speed of 25km/h.

The Ride category has been designed for more general cycling. The course is shorter, at 32km, and electric bikes are allowed, riders will only have to maintain 16km/h as a minimum speed.

Registrations are still open, but will close just before midnight on 21 June. Registration for the Ride category is €22.

Transport disruptions

The closed route will bring transport disruptions, with most closed or altered services ending around 13:00 according to STIB/MIVB. The most severely impacted routes are Tram 62, Bus 72, and Bus 58 which will not run.

Tram 8, 25, 93 and several bus lines will all run with disrupted services. The full list of lines impacted is available online.
