A 29-year-old man was seriously injured during a brawl in the Brugse Poort district of Ghent on Sunday evening, the East Flanders prosecutor’s office announced on Monday, adding that his condition is critical.
The fight erupted around 19:00 on Bevrijdingslaan. Social media footage shows a group of ten to 15 men involved in a violent altercation, wielding sticks and, reportedly, a crowbar.
Eight people were injured in total, with four taken to hospital. Two 29-year-old men remain under intensive hospital care, while another two, aged 25 and 26 respectively, were apprehended upon discharge. Two men (aged 23 and 27) were arrested without sustaining injuries. More arrests could be made following further investigation into the video footage that surfaced online.
“We need to ascertain each individual’s role and the circumstances surrounding the incident,” stated the prosecutor’s office. “We are reviewing CCTV footage and will be interviewing the suspects.” The cause of the events has not been determined yet, but it has been rumoured to be related to a family feud.
