Police in western Germany have arrested a Bosnian man and conducted several house searches as part of an investigation into the possible financing of an Islamist terrorist attack, according to the police and local prosecutor’s office.
The 27-year-old suspect was arrested in an operation by the German police’s Special Intervention Team (SEK). He will appear before the investigating judge later today.
Police simultaneously conducted raids in the cities of Essen, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, and Soest.
Details on where the alleged attack was due to take place and how it was to be carried out have not yet been released.
According to the newspaper Bild, the suspect had received military training. Police uncovered the alleged terrorist plot while investigating a money laundering scheme and concluded that the laundered money “would be used to finance an Islamist terrorist attack".
Other people are also under investigation. Police assume that some knew they were involved in the fraud, but it is unclear whether they knew what the money would be used for. Furthermore, several searches were conducted in the region at the homes of other people, who are considered as witnesses.
