The European Union imported €4.48 billion worth of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the first six months of the year, compared with €3.47 billion in the same period last year, according to the latest Eurostat data released on Monday.

Europe's LNG imports amounted to €26.9 billion in the first half of the year, including around €13.7 billion from the United States, which remains by far the bloc's largest supplier, Belga News Agency reports.

In 2024, the US supplied 45% of the LNG imported by the EU.

The European Commission plans to ban the import of Russian gas by the end of 2027, a proposal outlined in May.

The proposal aimed to increase Europe's energy independence, bolster security, and cut off funding to Russia's war chest.

Member States are required to draft plans by the end of the year detailing how they will contribute to phasing out imports of gas, nuclear energy, and oil from Russia.

Belgium's port of Zeebrugge was the main hub for importing Russian LNG in 2024, according to a report released in February by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).
