Transport users are being warned about a new scam affecting ticket machines in public transport networks, after cases were reported in the Lyon metro.

Buying a bus or metro ticket using a smartphone or contactless bank card has become routine for many passengers. However, the convenience of contactless payment has now been exploited by fraudsters, according to an alert issued by TCL, which operates Lyon's transport network.

The scam involves covering the contactless payment terminal with a small piece of adhesive tape. This prevents payments by smartphone or contactless card from working.

Rushed passengers often fail to notice the tape and, unable to pay 'contactlessly', resort to inserting their bank card and entering their PIN to complete the purchase.

While the method may appear crude, it is highly effective. The aim is not only to force users to switch payment methods, but also to allow scammers to observe the PIN code. Once obtained, the fraudsters can steal the bank card and carry out fraudulent transactions.

For now, the scam appears to be limited to the Lyon area, but its simplicity could allow it to spread quickly to other cities.

Passengers are advised to remain vigilant and to check payment terminals carefully before entering their PIN.
