The centrist party Les Engagés wants to ban advertising for foods with a Nutri-Score of D or E, the lowest scores.

The bill, tabled by federal MP Jean-François Gatelier (Les Engagés), will be considered on Thursday.

"We cannot, on the one hand, promote public health and prevention, and on the other, allow marketing to massively push the consumption of products that contribute to obesity, diabetes, or even certain cancers," Gatelier stressed in a press release on Wednesday.

This new bill complements the one aimed at making the Nutri-Score mandatory.

The centrist members of the majority are thus increasing pressure on this issue. For now, the intention of Public Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) is to proceed step by step.

Discussions are underway with industry and the retail sector to expand the presence of the Nutri-Score, at least in advertisements, he announced last month.

The minister also intends to propose a trial with healthy food displays at checkout counters, replacing sweets and candies.

Currently, displaying the Nutri-Score is optional at the European level. The European Commission has not yet introduced mandatory harmonised nutrition labelling on the front of packaging across the EU. Several Member States, including Italy, oppose the measure.
