The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading at an exceptional rate and has killed more than 2,500 people, the United Nations has warned.

Julien Harneis, the UN’s lead Ebola co-ordinator, said the epidemic had expanded dramatically in recent months.

Speaking at a press conference, he said 2,500 people had died in the past three months alone. Half of those deaths occurred in the last 20 days, underlining how quickly the crisis is worsening.

Harneis said the outbreak now covers an area larger than France. He warned that the disease is spreading faster than the international response.
