A car sped through a pedestrian zone in Hofgeismar, in the German state of Hesse, on Friday before crashing into the wall of a department store, leaving nine people injured, police said.
According to the police, the driver is believed to have suffered a medical emergency shortly before the crash.
Four people were taken to hospital as a precaution after suffering grazes, bruises or shock.
The driver, a 68-year-old man, was given first aid by bystanders at the scene.
He was later taken to hospital in a critical condition.
