More than a week after the fire broke out in the High Fens, emergency services remain on site as flare-ups were again detected overnight from Sunday to Monday.

Provincial authorities said rescue teams are continuing to monitor how the situation develops.

They had also expected a significant build-up of smoke during the night because of light winds, but the phenomenon was ultimately less severe than forecast.

People affected by the smoke or strong smells are being advised to stay indoors, keep doors and windows closed, and switch off mechanical ventilation systems.
