The hit musical "Les Misérables" will return to Flanders on 15 October 2023, 25 years after it was last shown in Antwerp. The musical will first be seen at Antwerp's Stadsschouwburg, and then at Capitole Ghent theatre. Studio 100 presented the new cast on Tuesday which includes Jonas Van Geel, Ianthe Tavernier and Nordin de Moor.
A new version of the musical is currently showing in London and will be brought to Belgium by Studio 100. This version is slightly shorter and does not include revolving scenery, although the barricades will remain.
Studio 100 is working with Dutch producers De Graaf & Cornelissen Entertainment and Van Lambaart Entertainment, consequently, Jean Valjean will be played by Dutchman Milan van Waardenburg, who will be joined by other Dutchmen on stage.
In producer Gert Verhulst's opinion, Flanders should have the chance to see "Les Misérables" every few years. "This is the musical of musicals. Something magical happens on that stage," he said. "The gap between rich and poor is less wide than in the days when Victor Hugo wrote the story but we have to be careful not to increase the contrast."

Studio 100 is used to conceiving and making their musicals themselves. However, this time it is British producer Cameron Mackintosh who calls the shots.
This is not the first time the musical has returned to Belgium as, in 2019, fans of the musical could enjoy the musical concert "Les Misérables en concert" at Forest National. But this production will bring the play back to Antwerp's Stadsschouwburg in full glory (in Dutch).
