A young mother has been arrested on suspicion of committing infanticide in Bruges, Belga News Agency and De Standaard have reported.
The woman was detained on Tuesday evening after residents in the city's Blauwe Poort ('Blue Gate') housing area discovered a baby's corpse in a rubbish bin.
The exact cause of the child's death has not yet been confirmed.
However, the West Flanders prosecutor's office has noted that a criminal investigation has been launched into possible infanticide and criminal negligence.
