Two people died in a fire on Thursday afternoon in a row of houses in the Walloon city of La Louvière, in Hainaut Province, local firefighters report.

When emergency services arrived on the scene, the house at the source of the fire was found to have completely burned down. The body of one person was quickly retrieved by firefighters. Rescue workers later announced the discovery of a second corpse in the same house.

“The fire took hold very quickly, as we rarely see. It’s really the first time we see a fire break out so quickly,” Françoise Ghiot, acting mayor of La Louvière, told RTL Info. At 20:00, investigators from the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team arrived on the scene.

The prosecutor’s office sent forensic and medical experts to the scene of the fire. According to preliminary findings, the cause of the fire was likely accidental. No trace of “accelerating products” was found at the scene. Investigators are leaning towards the possibility of a short circuit, which resulted in a blaze.
