At least 26 people have been killed in a series of tornadoes and storms across the US South and Midwest. Storms tore through towns and cities, destroying homes and leaving thousands without electricity or running water. More than 60 tornadoes were reported to have touched down across the country.
Some of the worst hit states include Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, Indian, Alabama, and Mississippi. Wynne, a community in the state of Arkansas, suffered extensive damage as the result of a tornado. Arkansas governor Sarrah Huckabee Sanders declared a state of emergency in her state on Friday, with the US National Guard coordinating relief efforts.
Also on Friday, storms led to the collapse of the roof of a theatre in Belvidere in Illinois during a heavy metal concert, killing one and causing 28 injuries.
On Saturday, more than 650,000 homes were left without power in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia, according to American site PowerOutage. The National Weather Service is warning that new storms, and potentially tornadoes, are set to strike the northeast of the country, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York State.
