A three-year-old girl who was transported to hospital on Saturday in a critical condition has died from her wounds. According to initial information released by the police, the young girl was the victim of a hit-and-run in Brasschaat, near Antwerp, but this explanation has since been ruled out by police.
“The investigation is still ongoing, but I can tell you that two people have been arrested,” spokesperson for the prosecutor, Kato Belmans, announced.
At around 19:00, the Brasschaat police received a call regarding a hit-and-run incident on Bredabaan. According to the family of the victim, the three-year-old child was mowed down as she crossed the road at a pedestrian crossing. They alleged that the driver then took off at high speed.
Police immediately opened an investigation into the investigation, but had little to go on, as nobody could give a description of the vehicle. There were apparently no witnesses to the incident.
Two people have now been arrested in relation to the death of the girl, including a 43-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man– the two family members of the victim. The exact circumstances under which the girl was fatally injured are still under police investigation.
