Located within reach of central Brussels by tram (a stunning route by itself), the Tervuren Arboretum is undoubtedly one of the most exquisitely beautiful forests in Europe.

Founded in 1902 under the direction of Belgian forestry specialist Charles Bommer, the Arboretum features more than 700 distinct tree species originating from locations near and far, including Canada, Russia, Chile, Spain, France, the US, Iran, and Japan.

Since its creation, the Arboretum has been a popular destination for walks, runs, and picnics. There are also some excellent places to go sledging during the winter months, though this now happens less frequently.

In addition to its beautiful tree-lined avenues, the Arboretum contains some remarkable "off-piste" walking and cycling routes, all of which are surrounded by vibrantly green, wonderfully lush vegetation.

The variation in scenery is especially remarkable, with entirely distinct tree and shrub species seamlessly blending into one another.

Comprising more than 30,000 trees in total, the Arboretum's forest canopy is so dense in some places that it is often difficult to see the sky.

The breaks that are between the trees give a perspective of how magnificent the species are, many of them significantly taller than the species more commonly seen in the Belgian countryside.

Though accessible by car, the best way to visit the Arboretum from Brussels is to get the number 44 tram from Montgomery to Tervuren – one of the most scenic tram routes in the world – and then walk 30 minutes through the picturesque town of Tervuren. Those keen on having a picnic are especially encouraged to grab a sandwich at Wip-In.
