The Floreffe wine fair, relocated to Spy in Jemeppe-sur-Sambre, has been cancelled due to forecasted high winds, the organisers announced on Friday morning.
Originally planned to take place under a marquee from Friday to Sunday, the fair was already experiencing challenges due to weather conditions, the Belga News Agency reports.
On Thursday, two marquee tents had already been swept away by the winds while setting them up, resulting in the Mayor of Jemeppe-sur-Sambre Stéphanie Thoron banning access to the site until further notice.
A decision to cancel the event was made on Friday morning following a meeting between the organisers, the local council, firefighters, and the police.
"We are deeply saddened that the hard work and investment by the winemakers, exhibitors, and our team have been thwarted like this, but it is impossible to risk people’s lives," lamented the organisers on their Facebook page.
